Metal Slug – Nazca (1996)

How do you go about writing a review for a game as famous as Metal Slug? Very carefully.  You see, so many people around the world love this game that if anyone were to write anything disparaging about it they could look forward to some major backlash.  With that said … on with the review!

The story is standard fare … a madman is bent on world domination and you must bring his reign of terror to an end. You can go it alone or bring a buddy along and whip some major ass.  Armed with a wide array of weapons, you’ll progress through six levels of side scrolling nirvana, blasting anything in your way.  You will even be able to jump into the title’s namesake for some major damage dealing!

Graphic wise this is the really shows off the power of the Neo Geo...

Kid Icarus – Nintendo (1986)

Kid Icarus is one of the best games on Nintendo’s 8-bit machine period.  Everything about Kid Icarus is top notch from the awesome level design, interesting enemies and great music.  It is platform gaming nirvana! Besides Metroid this is probably my favorite (non Mario) platform game onthe N.E.S.

The game takes place in the Kingdom of Angel Land and we find that they are under attack by an army of underworld monsters, led by the evil Medusa. The monsters have captured Palutena, the Princess of Light, and are holding her in the Palace in the Sky. A young lad by the name of Pitt has taken up the call to rescue the Princess and defeat the evil army.

The object of the game is quite simple, just make your way to the top of each level while collecting hearts which can be used to buy better ...

Baseball Stars Color – SNK (1995)

Portable systems are ideal for two genres of games, role playing and Sports.  Nothing passes the time faster on a long car trip than a great RPG.  But what if you have shorter trips?  When nothing beat a sports game.  Not all sports games excel on a little portable but golf and baseball do.

This game reminds me more of an 8-bit Nintendo baseball game then a modern portable one.  While at bat you have minimal movement and you just swing to hit the ball, no adjusting the bat to hit the ball like in Baseball Advance on the GBA.  Pitching gives you the standard “press down for a fast ball, up for a slow ball etc” options.   A really basic game but those can be fun of course.  Fielding is totally automatic, all you have to do is make sure you throw to the correct base.

Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker – Sega (1991)

With Michael Jackson being in the news so much lately I thought to myself, “Why not take a look at a classic game starring the King of Pop?” If this review goes well I might even review Kobe Bryant’s Basketball next!

The premise of the game is now disturbing because of Michael Jackson’s legal problems.  Mr. Big (that is original) is out to take over the world so he kidnaps all the children. Your goal is to rescue each level’s hidden children before time runs out.  Sound simple?  Nope, you’ll have to face a variety of enemies as you progress through the levels.  The enemies and locals are varied, from mobsters in Club 30, zombies and ghouls in the woods, spiders in the Caverns, to armed troops in the Enemy Hideout (again original).

You might be thinking right now, “How does ...

Doom – id Software (1994)

With the release of Doom 3 for the PC I felt it was the perfect time to take a look at Doom on the consoles.  My first decision was what console would I review Doom for as it has appeared on the SNES, 3DO, 32X and the Atari Jaguar.  This wasn’t a hard decision as I just asked myself “well, what system had the best version of Doom?” and the only choice was the Jaguar.  So here we go.

Doom on the PC was fantastic and I am sure every true gamer has played it.  If for some reason you haven’t then let me set it up for you quick. Many people have been sent to mars but none have returned. You are a space marine and have been sent to mars to find out what happened to them. It isn’t pretty as Martians have turned all of the astronauts into zombies and for some reason are out to kill you...
