Golden Axe Warrior – Sega (1991)

What happens when you combine the hack ‘n slash title Golden Axe with Nintendo’s break-thru RPG The Legend of Zelda? Well, you get a Zelda clone with Golden Axe characters. This game almost seems like it is running Zelda code as it is so similar. This isn’t a bad thing at all because it is actually a good game!

The game begins with a tale of a great war between the giants and the elders. A braze warrior came forward and helped to defeat the giants thanks to the Golden Axe, a gift from Thor’s Spirit of Thunder. Peace didn’t last long as a powerful giant, Death Adder, brought death and destruction back to the land and it is up to you to save the day.

The graphics are very nice for a Sega Master System game. They are colorful and well defined and you can easily make out the different monsters you are fighting. The areas are varied and the dungeons are well drawn. I think this game even looks better than the game it is copying.

The sound is upbeat where it needs to and suspenseful during boss battles. You can even recognize the original Golden Axe them song which is a nice plus.

I know that this is a short review but what more can I say about it besides go play it. If you loved the original Zelda than you will love this game. Of all the Zelda clones I feel this is the best done and some might say it is even more enjoyable than Zelda!
